A Little Bad News....And a LOT of Good!

Well haven't I been having fun? Sarcasm intended. Okay, it's not been all bad. Let's get the bad news out of the way first. Brandon decided to flush a toy down the potty. Alas, this is not our first foray into fixing a potty in our house. We've replaced our toilet approximately once a year since we've lived here. The last time, it was a new bar of soap that refused to disolve no matter how much hot water we tried to force down. It's looking unfixable at this point and now we are going to have to call in a plumber to tear open the lines and fish out the toy. It's going to cost $150. We have a second potty, so the Roto Rooter man is going to have to wait a few more weeks.

Now on to the FUN stuff! Tommy's nurse started with us Monday evening. She's a great lady and I love her already. More important, so does Tommy. Her first day here, within the first few minutes, she let me know up front that if she's going to be able to take care of Tommy, he has to be comfortable with her. Alone. Good point! He's spent 16 months with nothing but mommy-mommy-mommy and it's going to be rough to be with someone new. So I gave it roughly 45 minutes that we were both in the room while she interacted with him and then I left for another part of the house. He did well! So well, that instead of leaving at the time we had discussed, she offered to stay with him so Rob and I could take the big kids out. She said he did cry when he woke up from his nap, scared and confused, but it only lasted 5 minutes. He also got to see that yes, Mommy and Daddy DO come back!

More good stuff....can you stand it? Tonight I made myself an ice cream float. I didn't want to get any ice cream on my computer, so I set the cup with the spoon in it on the floor near my feet. A few minutes later, I hear a noise. I look down to see that Tommy has managed to navigate the 3 or 4 feet between us to get his brand new toy! He's banging away on the bottom of the cup with the spoon. I got out my camera and a miracle happened on film. Here it is!

Two new videos

This first video is most important. Tommy's speech therapist has suggested that we try to get Tommy over his aversion to having things in his mouth before we teach him to swallow from a spoon, so today, out came the blueberry baby food! I was totally shocked when he licked my fingers several times and had NO aspirating whatsoever!

The second video is a few minutes later of him just being silly. He has learned to swallow air and "burp", which has his ENT completely UNamused! He told us to discourage the behavior, but I still couldn't help but laugh when I accidentally got it on camera!
